Colombia is one of the countries making more efforts for the preservation of its natural richness. A great part of the geography exposing the highest biodiversity is protected by the government by means of the National Natural Parks system, these located in warm climates, forests, paramos, snow-capped peaks and deserts.
Currently, the system embraces 34 National Natural Parks, 9 Sanctuaries of Fauna and Flora, 2 National Natural Reserves, and an Unique Natural Area: these are more than 9.000.000 hectares, corresponding to 9% of the national territory, administered by the Unidad Administrativa Especial del Sistema de Parques Nacionales Naturales del Ministerio del Medio Ambiente. For this reason, public access to the parks is conditioned to a previous authorization. In all the points of Colombian topography, it is possible to find one of these 46 National Natural Reserves: the ample repertory for the ecological touring can be found from the hot Guajira geography in the
Caribbean littoral, down to the dense forests of the Amazon trapezid, from the islands in the Pacific to the forests in Vichada and Guainia, sharing frontier with Venezuela.
